Fuchsia lamp with African Ebony figures within a shelf area

Avoiding breakages

Living and working by the seaside at this time of year I get to meet a lot of families with young children. Some people are worried about bringing their small children into the shop because of breakages, but like at the Drs surgery of old, I have a small collection of toys for the little ones to play with whilst their parents or Grandparents are browsing.

On the same note some of my clients are worried that if they buy something made in porcelain it will be broken by their children or grandchildren. I quite often have conversations with clients where we talk about ways of displaying a lighting piece that is out of reach of the children or even the cats – for that matter!

Recently one of my clients told me that they had held off for a long time before buying one of my lamps because they were worried it would get broken by one of the Grandchildren (they have quite a few to consider).

She then went on to say that once they got their lamp home it hadn’t taken long to decide where to put it. They had to do a bit of rearranging, but in my world that is the fun part of tidying.

If you are worried about flailing hands, bodies or footballs my first piece of advice would be to consider a pendant shade – as this usually means that the piece is out of reach.

Other options are to get a lamp to fit in a book shelf or to go on a mantle piece – as they are sturdy surfaces that won’t get moved or knocked.

Alternatively you could put your lighting piece on top of a solid piece of furniture like a Tall Boy or Chest on Stand. Both of these would keep your lighting piece out of the reach of little hands.
